I received a letter from a GP member, He is interested in my and the Norwegian opinion about the whaling. I dont answear strangers picking me out of the telephone directory, but I'll give my answear to alt.animals.whales Let me name the stranger M.
The subject is interesting, because of all the different point of view. I eat the whales meat, and I suppose the Norwegian authorities have full supervision over the whalestock in our waters. Me and most Norwegians trust the Norwegian parliament and their decisions in the question about the whaling ,and we have a quite relaxed condition to Greenpeace and their engagement in the Norwegian whaling industry. I'm sorry M About me: I don't know much about whaling, and the export prohibition, but I exept that the hunters live of nature. This is probably exactly why it is in their interst to preserve and protect our nature. (They listen to IWC. Don't they ?)
My family have a tradition of hunting, for instance grouse, moose and roe-dear shooting. Eating meat from whale and moose comes as natural to me as eating porkbeef (æsj)or turkey to others. Wearing boots made of skin from seal comes also as naturally as wearing clothes made from cow hide. Hunting is a part of my culture heritage. It has contributed to forming my traditional diet, my history, and my identyty. I was born in to it, and I will never threaten the whalestock because it is also in my interest to preserve and protect them.
M , IWC and its members alaws Norway as a member to take a quota of about 500 Mink whales every year.. M you say..we defy the IWC and the opinion of the world. If you read this, you should know better as a engaged member of Greenpeace...The Norwegian mink whale hunt is fully legal, and conducted in compiance with the provision of the UN Law of the Sea, and the international convention for the Regulation of Whaling.Without the convention, I don't think that IWC will continue to exist. And remember: IWC is a whale comission, not a no-whaling comission. You(M) are making people belive something else. The Scientific Commitee of the International Whaling Commission has estimated that the population of mink whale in the areas where the hunt takes place, currently stands at 118 000 animals. I wonder..what will happen with the marin enviroment, if we stop the hunting forever as you wish? Think!
My dear, will it be any fish left ? G.Mc Callum's pictures are beautiful, but I'm beautiful too. Will you(M) let me eat fish, if the whalestoch increases...? Through the ages as you understand hunting and fishing has been a part of the very basis of our existence. To many of us, even today hunting and fishing constitutes a vital proportion of our livehood and well-beeing, I can't survive without proteines. In previous years, much of the blubber was dumped on the sea. But this has no canged given the posibility to exportation. I know you don't like it,but The Norwegian government announced that it would permit export of Mink whale products. The final preporation for the resuption of trade are now beeing finalised. These include a final quality check of a DNA-register to trace the whale products in trade and the specific rules governing trade.
M ,you fear uncontrolled hunting. But uncontrolled hunting is not the imminent danger to the NORWEGIAN hunting traditions,(you should know this as a member..) because the stocks are closely monitored by the international bioliogist and scientists. Hunting quotas as I mentioned and seasonal protection schemes etc. are implemented on the basis og expert advice in order to ensure sustainable utilisation of the stocks. I belive without doubt, the POLLUTION poses the greatest danger to the whalstock. Heavy metals and other toxis substances accumulate in the animals, thretening their fitness for human consumtion, Also, the animals fertility and survivability are affected by pollution. Why did't GP Supported our prime minister Bondvik when he visited London to talk about pollution ? Why did you screamed outside UD in Oslo at the same time ? (If you wanted respect and attention ?)
Where do the pollution come from ? England and Germany, isn't that right ? How importent is the bottom of the sea to Greenpeace ? Do you realy care about the whales ? I just wonder! M you compare the legal NORWEGIAN whaling industry to an atomic splitting bomb.(Uff!) I understand what you mean: You and GP want us to offer our traditions to be a prototype to their opinions. Will Greenpeace let us hunt at all ? I can't only eat vegetables.
M 'The Netherland closed down 9000 of 10 000 wind mills overthe last 100 years', 'And it must be difficult to grow up in your country with narcotic as a legal product!' Do I know enough about this ? (No) Anyway ,were do your country get the energy from , or were do you want to buy it ? Your countryes laws and decisions in each individual case might not make sense in Norway, but maby it's the right thing to do were you live ? You and your country have the right to handel your traditions and problemes without interference from other countreys or organisations, and under the Norwegian law, the democracy takes the decisions. That's why the whaling industry still exist if you like it or not..... And remember I love the animals and the nature with all my heart. ...................................................
