Ethnic and racial diversity, in many ways, are a pain. In Iceland, people do very well without them and have a pretty nice democracy.
But the United States is not Iceland, and never has been. There have been black people in this country since the 1600s, which is from well before when most white people's ancestors got here. There have been Hispanics living in Texas, New Mexico and California since the 1500s. There have been Native Americans here for what - 15,000, 20,000 years now?
And as for the rest of us, we're now so tangled together ethnically and economically that whether we enjoy our mixing or not, there's no way to separate us
