I was in Iceland in mid June last year but didn't manage to see a blue whale - the guy from Seatours said that the blues were a bit late and were expected to arrive in the following few days. But then I came across the figures on the website below showing that the number of blue whale spottings crashed last year - it looks like they never did arrive.

Any idea why this happened, and whether they will be back this summer ?

I got a reply from the company running the whalewatching trips ...

We do not know for sure why they where not here. We have been told that it might be because there was less food closer to land last summer and the sea temperature is lower, but these are only speculations and there have not been enough research to know anything for sure.

We are looking forward to seeing how it will be this year.
