Bush can't Remain in Denial on Global Warming - Byers

By Jamie Lyons, PA Political Correspondent, in The Scotsman, 15 Nov, 2004

One of Tony Blair's closest allies today condemned US President George Bush's failure to tackle climate change.

Former Cabinet minister Stephen Byers said the US could not 'sit on the sidelines in a state of denial' about the consequences of global warming.

Mr Byers said if the Prime Minister's pledge to make climate change a top priority for the UK's chairmanship of the G8 was to mean anything, President Bush's approach had to be challenged.

'The United States is responsible for a quarter of the world's carbon emissions,' he said.

Speaking at an international summit on climate change in Sydney, Australia, Mr Byers said: 'America needs to recognise its obligations in respect of this issue. If they sit on the sidelines in a state of denial about global warming and its consequences then any international approach to climate change will be fatally undermined.'

Mr Byers remains close to the Prime Minister, despite no longer sitting on the Labour frontbench. Along with Labour's elections chief Alan Milburn, Mr Byers is used by Downing Street to test the water for controversial ideas.

The evidence seems to contradict that. He is still in denial on Iraq as well as environmentalistm, the economy, etc etc. He is fully capable of total ignorance in my opinion.

It's over dumbass. Since he can't run again I would suggest looking toward the next one with something in mind besides finger pointing.

Why not? All he needs is to buy or extort six senate votes to remove term limits. Ought to be easy enough with another four years to position his flunkies. Or he could suspend voting by making a miltary crisis ( which may happen regardless given his lack of miltary genius ) and suspend elections 'during the crisis'. A ploy that has worked well in the establishment of many dictatorships, including Hitlers who seems to be his 'model'. .

After a suitable period of preparation, the establishment of a permanent presidency would seem natural. They have already pushed through the necessary suspension of civil rights guaranteed under the Constitution in the Patriot/Homeland acts and it would be easy to eliminate the strongest voices of opposition until nobody dares to object.
