Friday, July 5, 2002 at 17:00 JST WAKAYAMA — A fisheries research center in Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, said Friday it has succeeded in full-cycle artificial breeding of the endangered bluefin tuna.
Officials at the Wakayama-based Fisheries Laboratory of Kinki University said that although it had succeeded in the past in artificially breeding and raising bluefin tuna, it is the first time to achieve a full cycle, with the matured fish spawning their own eggs. They said it is the first time in the world for this to be done. (Kyodo News)
