1.2 billion people industrializing rapidly is going to be a problem, and if USA hadn't dropped out of international (environmental) cooperation it might even be in a position to complain to China. As it is China can just echo the US position with CO2 emissions and claim it is not in their national interest to do anything about mercury at this point. They will start research programs and come back in a few decades when it might be cheaper to do something.
As we learn from history we don't learn from history. China appears set to repeat our mistakes about pollution although on a vastly larger scale. I wonder if they have any idea themselves about how they are going to handle the environmental mess they are creating, and how they are going to feed their population when they have paved part of the land, poisoned the rest and drained all available groundwater.

Well, all the foreign firms are enjoying China's unsophisticated environmental laws. That's why workers are poisoned by battery factories and the Zhejiang region is poisoned by all the foreign investment. Google and you will find that it's not just China but other third world countries that receive abandoned shipments of chemical wastes from first world countries.
