Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon River basin has been a dominant theme of global environmental concern in recent years. A study published in the April 8 1999 issue of Nature says that current methods of estimating Amazonian deforestation fails to identify at least half of the badly damaged (but not completely removed) forests each year. This report found that annual deforestation rates are at least twice as great as previously thought
