Hi, I just recently started the 'Environmental CLub' at my high school in Oakland, California, and I was wondering if anyone here had any ideas for volunteer organizations that we can participate in...

Thanks,

Ooh, yes, if anyone has any ideas please tell us. I'm trying to get a club started in my school, 'Students For a Better World', which used to exist, but the sponsor quit from what I heard.

Oh, and in reply to Jonathan, are there any efforts towards recycling in your school? We have no can/plastic bottle recycling in our lunch room, which I'm trying to start, and as far as paper recycling goes; my tech concepts teacher said he saw the janitor take the paper recycle bucket and dump it in the garbage dumpster. See what you can conserve in the school.

Does your community have an 'Adopt a Highway' thing? Our city does, and basically you commit to clean a roadway, which you choose, of garbage.

'Adopt a Highway' is a good idea... I'll look into it. But I'm also looking into thigs ther than trash pickups, 'cause I don't think many people are excited about picking up trash.

Yeah, my school has can/plastic/glass recycling next to most trash cans, and there are paper reclying cans in most classrooms, so I don't think I could improve much on that...

Thanks!

An idea for an environmental club would be to first make a list of all those environmental organizations in your area and find out when they meet. Find out who the president is and find out if you can have one or more of your members attend a meeting. Have the chairperson at the meeting introduce you and your group and ask the members for ideas that could be used for your club. Report back to your club the results of the meeting and what the organization you visited is doing for the environment. This can involve all your members and this is one of the secrets to success of any club. Some of the groups that you could visit are Rod and Gun, Fish and Game, Naturalist societies, and many many more. Success to you and your club

How do you know we don't? What is the problem with a group of highschool students joining together because of common concerns/interests to better help the world? Consuming less...if you had read my earlier post about my situation, you would know that forming a club would do just that (I never said that, I focused more on recycling efforts in the school, but definately there would be interests towards using less).

We are talking about a group of highschool students! Most students wouldn't be concerned about being an 'environmentalist' for a status symbol, anyone in highschool concerned with the environment probably wouldn't be caught up with all that status BS anyway.

Would you rather all the people truely concerned just keep quiet, and only contribute themselves? Or would you rather they try to join together, give themselves a voice, and actually help?

Stop being such a jackass and see that maybe this person actually wants to help.

Gordo-

'You're so negative......I'm going to get some lunch...'

But what if the messenger is a fool?

They're a group of high school students, Bruce. We're not talking about lobbying Congress. If you want to whine and hate, go to alt.flame, where you can be properly spanked, have your diaper changed and be sent on your way.

Bloody troll.

Now, on to the ORIGINAL question:

Jonathan, here on the east coast, we have a program called the Envirothon, led by the Department of Natural Resources. Have your counselor look into the west coast version. Also, I would elicit your local college's extension program (UC Davis I think?) for ideas. Brucee boy also gave some good examples of environmental groups - I would contact those. Wildlife rescue groups can be good speakers, and usually bring along a falcon or hawk or two (We have one that entertains the students with a turkey vulture.) to show and teach about ecology.

Bruce is leaving? If only we could be this lucky.

Ok, Bruce, even though I believe you're here just to inflate your own ego by arguing, I'll play your little game for a few rounds:

What did you expect? Greenpeace and the Sierra Club just to snap their fingers, and everybody to shout, 'Hurrah' and give up their cars? Social engineering takes time. Look at the U.N. - they deal with issues everybody knows is repulsive (war and famine), and they still have trouble enforcing their own edicts. And they've been in existence for 50+ years.

Maybe not in Britain. Here, it depends. I've seen many an environmental project done on school grounds. Everything from victory gardens to nature trails to habitat restoration. To simply dismiss the question is the sign of a closed mind.

Again, yes, I have and am currently setting up school projects for the secondary and collegiate levels. That's the main reason I attacked your troll post - whenever I see an asshole (like yourself) insult a student's desire to learn just so he can be 'big man on Usenet', it makes me want to experiment on how much of your computer I can readily fit up your ass.

All this article shows is how far we have to go. You may call the war lost, but I see the battle as just beginning.
