Of course the majority of those deaths occur in Eastern Europe. Thank the legacy of communism for that...

Economic Democracy - didn't this report also mention the damage done to the mental development of European kids by residues from the burning of leaded gasoline?

Stan is having a good time blaming European pollution on the legacy of Eastern European Communism, which obviously did do awful things to the environment through over-reliance of the use of high-sulfur, dirty coal. But the leaded gasoline issue is one that affects many Western European countries as well, some of which have only recently followed the US is outlawing the use of leaded gasoline in cars.

I am quite aware of the fact that Europe continued to use leaded gasoline well into the 80's, having lived in Germany in 1981. I submit, however, that environmental damage in the Easter Bloc went well beyond that. I still recall a trip through Eastern Europe and the Czech Republic in the 1990's and seeing junkyards full of old cars and equipment piled up adjacent next to (and in some cases, in) the Oder and Danube rivers, with oil and other residue visibly leaching into the river. I bring this up because ED likes to go on capitalist-bashing rants, failing to realize that some of the worst environmental abuse occurred in communist countries.
