A few days ago, I had a discussion with a very wise man about the whole climate change situation, especially in regards to taking positive action. He said, and I admit, I hadn’t thought about this before, that most people are spending a lot of energy discussing if there is or isn’t global warming (Duh - of course there is), but not only that, it seems, the energy spent on trying to reduce the carbon footprint, and living a greener life, is all very good and well, but it has come a little to late in the game. Instead, this wise man thinks that the ecologists, and bloggers should be thinking of how to deal with what the future holds for us, with the inevitable rising global temperature.
For example - what plans have been made for Island people and for people living in coastal areas? are there evacuation plans on an international level? How is this going to be dealt with?
As I said, this man is really wise, and I had to agree with everything he said.
I was a little troubled because I myself have been acting as the afore mentioned people, not really realizing that the consequences of global warming are already upon us, big time.
I was very happy, therefor, to read Carl’s article A Rising Tide Floats All Boats (and Some Backyards)
He says:
As climate change continues, the sea will continue rising. The world may shirk off the problems of thousands of Pacific islanders. But what happens when it becomes necessary to move hundreds of millions of people living along the coast of Bangladesh and south Asia? On the other hand, there could be good news: Wall Street in Manhattan might begin flooding soon, too.
Sadly, the only thing that will get people moving on planning is the fact that Manhattan might be flooding too.
