Japan catches 440 minke whales in Antarctic Sea
If the Japanese figures are accurate they have just about decimated the Antartic Minke race.
Thursday, April 4, 2002 at 09:30 JST TOKYO - Japan has caught 440 minke whales in the Antarctic Sea since last November, reaching the upper limit of its most recent catch targets, the Fisheries Agency said Wednesday.
In what Japan calls its latest 'research whaling' expedition, a fleet of vessels identified a record 5,460 minke whales in 2,289 groups, the agency said. Two of the ships ships arrived in Nagasaki port Thursday morning. (Kyodo News)

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????
?????????
Shit! That's great!!!!!!
What I guess you don't understand Geoff, is that identifying 5,460 minke whales does not mean that there are only 5,460 minke whales in the Antarctic.
Can I be bothered explaining? No... you are already a lost cause

You mean antarCtic.. and what are you claiming now?????????????
Here you show your complete lack of any understanding of Cetacean surveys whatsoever Geoffy - 5460 Minke´s identified does not mean there are only 5460 minke´s in the antarCtic...is that what you are claiming?? that there are only 5460 minke´s???

Only about one million more to go then.
Why do you insist on making a fool of yourself here?

Why do we insist on doing the equivalent of bashing our heads up against a brickwall by even bothering with him?

Geoffy, they are not only hunting - some of the ships are doing line transect surveys
Once again Geoffy - you are displaying your utter ignorance here
<snip>
What?? Geoffy, are you suggesting that the fleet covered every square inch of the antarctic? in flat calm weather? or what are you suggesting? Do you have any idea what a line transect survey is? Do you have any idea how the numbers are arrived at? Do you have any idea of the methods used? Do you have any idea of who the observers are?
No you don´t know shit - thats´s plainly obvious
appetites.
What you believe Geoffy matters not one whit, there are a number of IWC observers on the fleet. The head IWC observer is a New zealander. The survey methods are approved and accepted by the IWC scientific committee as are the figures..
Let us say that you are a raving idiot - we don´t need to prove that either as you do a great job yourself with these moronic ramblings..
Tell me Geoffy, do you treat your patients according to scientific methods? or do you just shake a voodoo stick at them ? Tell us how you treat your patients without science.. I´m all ears...

WOW! You are a genius!
Do you think that because the Japanese only saw 5,460 creatures that there are only 5,460 creatures?
You might like to read up about how sightings survey's contribute to the assessment of stock numbers.
You also might be interested in reading about just what exactly 'identified' means in this context.
As I alluded to above, sighting 5,460 minke whales does not indicate that there are only 5,460 minke whales...
You shouldn't. You should listen to what the IWC's scientific committee has to say. Last time they announced a figure it stood at 760,000 in the Southern Ocean, and a grand total of around 1,000,000 worldwide.
How do you think they came up with these figures Geoff? Do you think that they sent the Japanese out to count them all of them?
200,000? That's heaps.
Besides geoff, when people assess stock numbers they don't just take a wild guess...
Who ever said whaling activities will be unrestricted??????????????
No, I do believe that is you. Mr Lund is quite astute.
They know one hell of a lot more about whales than you ever will.
Right. So even if the scientific committee did come out and say that there were only 200,000 whales you wouldn't believe them anyway?

What I believe does not matter, what I know is something else. It appears I have confirmation of the less than 200,000 figure for the Minke Antartic population from your rabid replies to my reply. Did your masters tell you this? If I am what you call me, why are you so worried, and why bother responding? Why do you support the continuing degradation and depravation of the sea peoples named Minke? Think about what I say, Christopher, Geoff.

Where did you get confirmation?
Why not shoot an easy target? It keeps skills honed.
The whales have it better than other lifeforms which humans eat Geoff.
Just out of curiosity, do you consider those lifeforms which you consume to be peoples too, are is it just the whales?
Thinking about what you say in most cases only requires a few seconds thought, if that

Excellent, show us the references / documentation
Show us the references / documentation
from your rabid replies to my reply. Did your masters
Rabidness? I have´nt even started yet Geoffy 8) until now, I´ve been reasonably polite...
If I am what you call me, why are you so worried, and why
Why bother responding? Damn good question !! Maybe it´s because I want to see how far you will go in support of your delusions - then again, it´s more likely to be that you are such an easy target as david suggests....
Why do you support the continuing degradation and
They are whales Geoffy .. whales ... not people... obviously your professors at med school failed to drum the difference into you ( but then again, you are so rabidly against science and professors that you probably skipped those classes anyway right? )
Keep on posting Geoffy, I ' rabidly ' await your next gem
