Under the terms of the whaling permit issued to the Makah, the following applies:
Any whaling permit [even an invalid one not issued by IWC but by shady US governemnt] shall expire when any one of the following events occurs: (1) the whaling team lands a gray whale; (2) the whaling team strikes a gray whale but is unable to land it; (3) the whaling team returns to port after a whaling expedition in which no gray whales have been struck; (4) the whaling team fails to initiate a whaling expedition within 72 hours after permit issuance; or (5) the Council determines, for any reason, to terminate the permit.
'Strike' means any blow delivered to a whale by a harpoon, lance, rifle, explosive device or other weapon which results or is likely to result in death or serious bodily harm to the whale.
Under item (2) above, the permit expired when the whale escaped. This means from then on, the Makah were hunting without a permit, with the Coast Guard alongside as a accessory during in this illegal act.

Every mainstrean news articles, with the exception of one, stated that there was NOT a strike to the whale, they missed because of the actions of that moron named Erin caused the Makah to miss theit throw. The only places you will see any mention of a 'valid' strike is the bogus propaganda pieces posted by the ODI, WWP and other extremist organizations that masquerade as press releases (But are still only propaganda none the less.) Just because they say the whale was struck doesn't really matter and given the ARA's track record of blatant lies and misrepresentations of every aspect of the Makah hunt, how could anyone in their right mind believe anything they have to say?

Correct me if I am wrong, but in my understanding, the whaling permit is for 10 days. When it expires, it can be renewed for another 10 days. The weather has been bad out here this past week, so I know at least one family had to renew their permit. There are several families with whaling permits, so even if one family with an issued permit strikes the whale, that does not prevent other families from enacting the right to hunt on their own permits. Also, it has been my understanding (from the local talk here on the peninsula) that the permits were not issued to a whaling 'team', but to the whaling 'families' and I believe there are 6 this year.

Not nearly as many people believe the crap coming form ODI and WWP as last year and by next year............well you can all sit around and reminisce about how you almost (but not quite) stopped the mean ol' Makahs because no one else will even care or remember.
Bet the Makah get a whale this spring and nothing you do will stop that eventuality ...... any takers?

i hope you get some takers john, take advantage of that sure bet <G>
the makah have an edge, and it's not the coast guard protection, it's the fact that they can be whaling quickly, while the protesters have to travel long distances to make it to the whaling grounds. even if they are present, unlike last year, there's no guarantee they can stop it, but the likelyhood of them missing it like last year is strong.

Well at least they don't have to worry about Watson getting drunk the night before and missing the whole show because he was sleeping off a hangover like last year. He didn't even bother showing up this year for what he knows is a losing cause but he did send a rickety old boat that was obviously a SSCS throwaway or perhaps a spare lifeboat they didn't need. Of course I hear the SSCS had to cut way back because donations took a big hit after his opposition of the Makah, way too much bad high profile publicity and alienation of many of his wealthy but less vocal supporters. Watson is trying to spin it differently but those who are privy to 'Republican' style budget rhetoric know 'lean and mean' really means budget cutbacks and less services. Now he has to save face with the wealthy donors and keep a low profile while at the same time not looking like he's chickening out to the radical activists, quite a tightrope walk for sure. Watson should be a politician, it definitely fits his personality traits .......

etc.
Two questions:
1. Who issued the permit? (Just an innocent question, I really dunno.)
2. How about an Adobe PDF of *this* doc?

Of course, more lies from the whale killer crowd. This rumor was started by native pro whalers (at least that's where I heard it first) and has never been substatiated by anything. Want a challenge ANON? Prove what you just said.
As has been the case long before the Makah issue, SSCS has been busy on many fronts. I personally wish they were here in greater force this year, but the local groups seem to have the matter well in hand. MORE CONTRIBUTIONS PEOPLE!!!
Really? 'I hear' is a great way to make a claim and discount responsibility for making it! Where did you 'hear' this from? How did you substantiate these claims? Why should anyone belive you?
Running any nonprofit org requires amazing skills. You have shown no data of budget cutbacks within SSCS so you have no validation of anything you say. I would agree with you that I would love to see Paul get into politics....then you whale killers could shiver with your harpoons all shriveled up!

Well for one thing I have seen copies of the SSCS tax returns, after all they are available to anyone with a few bucks, as is true with all 501(c)(3) non-profit orgs. Also know for a FACT he is currently under investigation by the government due to discrepancies in the afore mentioned tax returns.
As for Paul being hung over........well it is obvious from ALL the videos by the various media outlets that Capt. Kangaroo and the Good Ship Lollypop WAS NOT present at the time of the successful whale hunt last year........what more needs to be said ......
Now Watson is making claims that his income last year was only $15,000 which I seriously doubt would even cover his Seattle bar tabs and those fancy MEAT dinners he is so fond of (Yes Cappy Paul is responsible for the murder of sentient beings to fill his own hypocritical belly, he is NOT a vegan), not to mention the cost of all those fancy captains outfits he wears ......... but more on that one later ....
