The Makah Whaling Familys are out on the water practising and getting strong. The Makah are an honorable people who want to 'do things right'. They will wait for the EA to be released. In the meantime they will be getting strong and ready for the whale hunt which will come when the time is right. The anti-whaling faction has only managed to delay the hunt.

They have gyms for that sort of thing. You don't need to murder whales to 'get strong',

Which will hopefully be 'never'.

Good. That's a few less sentient beings (whales) being murdered by beings who appear to be less understanding and compassionate than the creatures they hunt. So, delay is good. I am not satisfied with merely a delay however. This will not stop until the Makah stop whale killing.

It is impossible to 'murder whales'. Certainly whatever 'practising' is, it isn't murdering whales even in *your* feeble mind.

But, you are hopeless. It will be, soon enough.

What an absurd thing to say. Can you provide _any_ evidence that grey whales in anyway are 1) sentient beings, 2) more understanding of anything than are the Makah people, or 3) more compassionate about anything than are the Makah people.

I would suggest that whales are dumb animals which have no compassion at all, no understanding at all, and instead operate almost totally by instinct. That does not define a 'sentient being'. And since fools like Dr. Lilly have been trying to prove otherwise for decades and have not come up with even one single shred of evidence to support such concepts (other than claiming that a whale has a larger brain than they do and that when dosed with LSD humans can 'download' from a whale).

However, there is definitely some evidence (your articles in this group for example) that whales are at least smarter than you Richard.

Then it never need stop, eh?

Makah's are indeed honorable people. But about doing things right... well, that's up to debate.

I will allow them their right to a whale hunt. But I must ask if there isn't a better way to stregthen their values besides such an act.

Anti-whale nuts are just eco-terriorists. The rest of them are more

Rich actually does more harm to those who wish to help whales than he does to the people he attacks with his racist bile.

So, yes you are right. Everyone agrees.

Can you prove that you are a sentient being? How do you prove that anything is sentient?

By what definition do you define 'sentient'?

As to whales or any animals being sentient please read the 'Culture Shock' article in the New Scientist, 24th March 2001, pp.26-31, an excellent read and may hopefully educate those of you that doubt that animals think.

Are the Makah people going to use traditional hunting methods? Are they just going to kill for sustenance or are they doing it because it is 'traditional'?

And please do not even think of calling me racist like you did with Richard, that is jusst plain abuse and in no way does your arguments or image any

Richard has been posting to this group (and to alt.native) for years. Virtually everyone who ever engages him in serious debate ends up pointing out that he is indeed a racist. It won't do your image a bit of good to either miss that fact, or to try denying it or defending him.

You can look up the definition of sentient in virtually any dictionary of the English language. There is no evidence that whales are more, or less, 'sentient' than cows, chickens, goats, fish, pigs or any number of other animals that humans eat with regularity.

Please expand on your questions about Makah people and traditional whale hunting, because what you said above has no meaning. They are clearly using traditional methods. They are clearly hunting whales as much due to tradition as any other reason. They are clearly going to eat the whale. What was your point?

Many of my neighbors are very busy this weekend with preparations for the spring whale hunt here too. It is very educational, and it is also vital to the community as both a traditional activity around which the community gathers and as a source of food.

Virtually everyone here wishes the Makah a good, as safe hunt.

Graeme. Long time no post. Been well? We had some good discussions after the nasty name calling.

While I admit you raise good points, and is subject to occational good debate, Rich is not in the same league.

My ISP don't carry the entire thread, but I've seen Rich's posts. There are sophmoric, and many times misinformed. The man doens't digest information. Rather, he spouts other's word as gospel, and rejects anything contrary. I've read posts where he make nasty name calling to include all Makah's. Such sweeping suggestions of a fews acts are typical of many is, by definition, stereotyping and the foremost result of racism.

Is Rich a racist? Probably not by his own admission. But in his actions he certainly comes off as one.

I enjoy Rich's posts, I tend to support his viewpoint and he is lucid and clear. He doesn't attack people unless he is subjected to abuse and bullshit. I don't think he is racist but that is a shit cloud the likes of Floyd tend to throw about.

And thanks for asking, I have been well. I have been away for a few days, did an excellent ship's fire fighting course and went sailing with some incredible people who were making a doco about Capt. James Cook and his voyage around New Zealand.

I am back, dolphin watching is going very well, lots of dolphins and lovely people from all over the world.
