It is time to put pressure on the Mexican government! I live in Mazatlan, Sinaloa. Yes, the heart of the Sinaloa drug wars, though the drug cartels are nothing compared to the neglect of the ENVIRONMENT here. I have lived here for over 4 years and have watched quietly as a whole new city has popped up with billion dollar condominiums, along with new water ways dredged for leisure yachts. Meanwhile, on the other side of town where the new commers rearly visit... Trash night is when ever there is a high tide the people put their household and buisness trash on the beach for ¨mother ocean¨to wash it away. (out of site out of mind, is the mentality here) The people can´t really be the ones to blame, after all most of them cannot read or write (still to this day!).
The trash on the beach is a small problem to remedy, and a handfull of locals (who are usually laughed at by the ignorant), are trying to educate the uneducated. Yeah!! Poco y poco..
The bigger problems here are the lack of sewage treatment plants! ALL of the RAW SEWAGE, from homes, hotels, restaurants, ect.. goes straight into the ocean! The government always shows t.v. speacials about how well the VERY OUTDATED sewage treatment plant works. How can ONE very small outdated sewage treatment plant keep up with the new population increase? With all of the new development happening, not one new sewage treatment plant is under construction!
The electrical power plant here is also outdated and fueled by diesel. No new efforts are being made to change the sorce of electrical power in this rapidly growing part of Mexico. The polution here is so bad that it is almost impossible to grow plants, trees, ect... Why is none of this new money going into converting the power into something more enviornmentaly friendly, like WIND! Being on the ocean and at the foot of many mountains it is very windy here, as well as sunny (hello, solar)...
As of now, when you arrive here at the airport, the route into town goes through the nastiest part of the city, (which includes a trip past the power plant). Instead of educateing the people and cleaning up this route... The government is spending (god only knows how much), money to hide this part of town by building a new road to surpass reality.
Due to a new cruise ship dock that is being built, the city is suffering from earthquakes almost every day. The consrtuction of the new docks to hold the weight of the BIG SHIPS, requires that the pileings (sp?) be driven so far into the earth that the drilling is causeing it´s discs to move and change. (hello, Pacific falt line) Numerous protest have been made by the towns people and have been ignored!
I would like to attach photo´s of all of these things, unfortunatly I don´t know how.
Truth is, (believe it or not) I am not trying to make Mexico look bad! I live here because I love this country and her people. It is not their falt that their government is not helping or educateing them!
CAN YOU PLEASE HELP???? The issues here affect not only Mazatlan but The Sea of Cortez, were as most of you know is a major breeding grounds for whales. The Pacific coatline and ocean ingeneral.
Please forgive me for not spell checking..
