From Japan today, ah, the numbers supporting whaling have fallen, despite the national drive to persuade people to eat cetacean flesh, whales and dolphins. I really would like to see a breakdown of interested parties in the Japanese Whaling Industrial Complex, companies and individuals involved, whether private or government in background. There have been accusations in the various discussion groups that the Whaling issue is a front for Japanese nationalist groups. It would be interesting to see who comes from where, and why they do what they do - a Japanese Whaling Who's Who if you like.

From Japan Today

47% for resumption of commercial whaling: poll

Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 11:00 JST TOKYO - Forty-seven percent of Japanese respondents to a fresh opinion poll are in favor of a resumption of commercial whaling but 36% are against it, the Asahi Shimbun reported Saturday.

The Asahi said its poll on Sunday and Monday shows male supporters of commercial whaling outnumbered their opponents by 59% to 30%, while female opponents outnumbered female supporters by 42% to 36%. (Kyodo News

That would be rather interesting. The supporters of whaling in most countries certainly seem to have a nationalistic bent.

Females tend to be more compassionate, while more men have that testosterone driven 'let's go kill something' attitude. Not a surprising result.
