...which is why i'm leaving the cross-posting to misc.misc, instead of deleting it as i usually do. (i have to take my pathetic egoo-gratification wherever i can get it...)

kent, next time you find yourself in a public library, check the SF shelves for Cordwainer Smith, and read some of the stories again. unlike much other SF from that era, they have aged remarkably well. and quite often they turn out to be the mental equivalent of Altoids.

It's been fun, in following this thread, to realize that there are some of his stories, and a whole novel of his, that I have _not_ read in my 48 years of science fiction reading. Yum! I will take your advice.

His stories stand the test of time because they are stories about _people_; the technology is crucial to set the scene, but then disappears into the real story, always one of human relations and human striving against all odds.

One wishes to have learned in some detail the story of his life to find what made him so insightful of the innermost workings of the human mind.

One rages with jealousy not to have his command of the English tongue.

Life's like that a lot.
