Another accident report that shows that when it comes to safety, SUVs are the Unsafest Vehicles money can buy...
Saturday, November 16, 2002 - 3:00:00 AM MST Local woman, parents killed in SUV accident By Christine Louie, STAFF WRITER A San Mateo woman and her parents were killed Thursday after their SUV swerved and flipped over on a straight stretch of Highway 1 in Southern California. Another man also died in the accident. Kaire Feng, 34, was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer on Highway 1 near Camp San Luis Obispo when she lost control of her car at about 3:30 p.m., flipping it on the center divide, according to the California Highway Patrol. Feng and her parents, Fan Lin Shyu Fong and Feng Ching-Yuan, both 60, were all killed. CHP officials said Feng's car also collided with a Dodge van. The driver, 53-year-old Randall Orrick of Atascadero, sped up to avoid Feng's overturning SUV but ended up rear-ending a Toyota 4-Runner. Orrick was killed and his passenger, 33-year-old Jose Luis Toledo of Morro Bay, suffered major injuries. Toledo was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Friday, hospital spokesman Dennis Paul said. The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP, which is still investigating the cause of the accident. On Friday, Catherine Wu, Feng's sister-in-law, was trying to cope with the news at the family's home in San Mateo. She said Feng was simply tagging along with her parents on the four-day trip. Staying at a relative's house in Irvine, the three thought they could sight-see while Ching-Yuan, Feng's father, finished some business, Wu said. She said Feng's parents were visiting their daughter in San Mateo and that Ching-Yuan was supposed to be back in the Bay Area by Friday to catch a flight back to Taiwan. But when the three did not return on time, Wu said she and her husband became worried. '(Friday) morning we tried to call them and they didn't answer their phone so we got suspicious,' she said. Wu said she and her husband called their Irvine relatives to ask about the threesome. That's when they learned of the accident, Wu said. 'It's very hard for my husband right now,' she said. She said the family plans to arrange funeral services, but declined to comment further.

You are absolutely right! We should get those folks out of their SUV's and into a decent PU (or onto a bike of course).

Another accident report that shows that when it comes to safety, SUVs are the Unsafest Vehicles money can buy... Above have nothing to do with an SUV. >
Your operative words: 1. Swerved 2. Flipped over 3. Accident ? Operative words should be: 1. Mistake = Can't drive properly, poor reaction time, whatever. 2. and 3. = can't drive properly, over reacted, whatever.
Orlando says:
Real operative words:
1. UNDERTRAINING... Most American drivers are badly undertrained... SUV drivers should be specially trained...
2. LACK OF ENFORCEMENT... Stop the enforcement mockery, which is only good at collecting money... Real enforcement would be comprehensive to include issues like driving too fast/too slow for road conditions, use of signal lights, passing on left only...
3. PASSIVE SAFETY, once an accident happens... Most SUVs underscore here since they don't have to meet automobile safety standards...
And last but not least...
4. ACTIVE SAFETY, before an accident happens... This is where SUVs are the most dangerous... Their high center of gravity makes them extremely prone to roll overs in routine situations like unexpected maneuvering...
There's one area, though, like in the example above, where SUVs are #1... creating havoc...
