Many many problems exist in the Yucca Mountain project starting from the fact that such a site is built 100 miles from Las Vegas, that the spent fuel rods would be transported through many states, that the plans are too complex to be examined in simulation.

The requirements to run DOE’s simulation - on whether the proposed nuclear waste dump at Nevada’s Yucca Mountain will work - is so complicated, no one can run it, reports the Nevada Appeal.

Still in spite of everything, and especially the strong opposition to the project from environmentalists and activists in Nevada and elsewhere, the government insists on the continuation of the project.

In the updates about the project that was declared dead few time but refuses to die it can be seen that maybe the solution would be political.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton put a national spotlight on Nevada’s signature issue Wednesday, holding a discussion on Yucca Mountain before a full contingent of national media.”When I am president, Yucca Mountain will be off the table forever,” Clinton said. The New York senator said the proposed nuclear waste repository, about 100 miles from Las Vegas, was a national issue, because spent fuel rods would be transported through many states. She criticized the Bush administration for continuing the project despite botched science.

I usually don’t interfere with political agenda but it seems that the future of the mountain depends on either the results of the election or the internal problems in the projects and the budget cuts to bury it at least informally.
