I keep reading on various blogs and news sources what kind of changes are needed to help save or preserve the environment and most of this changes don’t really happen. I’m not talking about governments here - I’m talking people me and you or at least the average citizen.
- We don’t eat less tuna or salmon to save the oceans ecosystem.
- We don’t eat less meat to help minimize carbon emission.
- We don’t use public transportation when we can (afford) to drive.
- We are doing almost nothing to reduce carbon emission.
- We continue to use plastic bags
- We buy much more than we need
I’m not trying to say that we are irresponsible bad people I’m saying that for most of us what has changes is that now we feel guilty when we do something we know is bad for the environment.
It is just like the cream cake dilemma you know it is bad for you but you eat it anyway and feel guilty.
Many people have modified their habits to include more conscious thought of the environment but I think that we try to cling to the things we really love enjoying them as long as they last.
The psychology of decision making and change has to be researched further if we are to be able to create real shift in the personal as well as the global decision making. There can be many examples to places that need to be up for change but just from today I’ve read two that focus on tradition.
Rowan is talking about the irrationality of growing cotton.
Annie Christian is talking about the need to limit the consumption of sea food after a visit to a market in South Korea.
