Not true, gumby, dammit. The first immigrants, the Irish and Scots, could pretty much fit into the US, being from basically English culture. They all spoke English.
The Polish came about 60 years after, around 1900. Throughout the late 1870's, Prussia, Germany and Russia carved up Poland, causing extreme poverty and political strife. As a result, a full 1/5 of Poland's population emigrated - most families could only afford to send 1 son overseas to earn a living.

When they arrived, they were not accepted by the Irish, English and Scots. The incoming populations spoke Austrian, Russian or Polish, but most had never seen English. Immigrants just stared at officials. Because of the language barrier, the first immigrants were labeled 'stupid'. The label has stayed to this day.
